I now offer some thoughts and insights which may be suggestive of the year ahead.

In January 2023 I wrote:

God is shaking the nations so that his kingdom will manifest. God’s kingdom cannot be shaken. It is our one stability in an unstable world. The forces of Chaos will not overcome God’s people.

We certainly saw the forces of Chaos at work in 2023. “Chaos” became the go-to word for journalists reporting on national and global affairs. God was at work permitting Chaos, partially in judgement, but also in grace. He allows chaos to manifest to show his displeasure toward sin and the inevitable results of human rebellion. The eruption of Chaos challenges every earthly society and system of government in order that the nations might seek the Kingdom of God, the only Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

We are now in a time of grave international conflict. The Russian war in Ukraine continues to rage. The despicable Hamas attack on Israel of 10/7 in 2023 provoked the Israel-Gaza war. Both these conflicts will continue to play out in 2024. The global geo-political and geo-spiritual implications of these wars remains to be seen. International pressure coupled with high level diplomacy no doubt will eventually bring some form of peace, but the world will be a different place. Further eruptions and escalation of conflict appear likely. The spiritual forces behind the eruption of hostilities will not rest.

Behind the disruption lie dark spiritual powers intent on opposing God’s original plan, his Eden project. God’s plan is to bring all things into conformity to his nature and will, fully manifesting his glory on earth as in heaven. Ultimately, he will recreate humanity and the entire cosmos bringing us back to Eden, the original creation plan. In the meantime, God’s mandate to Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply and to spread the conditions of Eden to the whole earth, has never been rescinded. We fulfil this mandate today by praying, preaching, and reaching out to the lost and hurting, by living our lives in line with God’s will.

The global community of Christian believers is made of up of both Jews and Gentiles united in Christ. We are the only beacon of ultimate hope in a lost, confused and increasingly violent world. But we must rise up and fearlessly live for God, passionately cling to him and uncompromisingly proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ to the nations.

The conditions of war create both challenges and opportunities for the gospel. Reports are coming in from Gaza that suggest some Palestinians are turning away from Islam, disillusioned by harsh treatment under Hamas. Christian war aid and support for the Jewish people has been a welcome contrast to increasing antisemitism in the West. These open doors of opportunity for the gospel. But that is not the whole story. Islamic fundamentalism is also rising, spurred on by the perception that not just terrorism, but Islam itself is under attack. New barriers to the gospel are evident as both Jews and Muslims feel the war in Gaza presents an existential threat.

Israelis, whose close neighbours are committed to the extinction of the State of Israel find it difficult to accept the Christian message. Attempts to convert them appear to be yet another attack on their Jewish identity. I suspect that alongside the opportunities for the gospel in the Middle East, we will encounter both Jews and Muslims whose hearts have been hardened by recent events. The Palestinian/Islamic narrative is increasingly accepted by many in the West. It is going to become harder to present Christ to both Western and Middle Eastern nations. Islam is not just opposed to Jews but is also hostile to Christians. This will become even more clear in the weeks and months that lie ahead.

But the good news is that the message of the New Covenant, originally promised by God for Israel, also includes the Gentiles. Jews and Muslims, together with those of all religions, and none, are universally invited to know God and to touch his glory in the person of Christ. Gospel fullness will eventually include both Israel and all nations. This is the broader prophetic context in which we should discern what is taking place now and what will unfold in the year ahead.

There will be a growing call for new political movements, some of which will be positive while others will further polarise British, European and North American societies.Â

There will be a solidifying of existing alignments and the emergence of new alignments in international politics with new treaties extended to include other nations.

Wokeness and religious pluralism will increasingly impact the British Monarchy. Signs of this will be present in and surrounding the Coronation of King Charles III.Â

A false “social unity” will be promoted in society, not by consensus, but by imposing aggressively liberal and progressive policies and laws. There will be increasing opposition to Christians in Britain, Europe and North America. There will be stronger and more audacious attempts to criminalise Bible-believing Christians. Many will be jailed for their faith.Â

The issue of abortion, recently highlighted by the reversal of Rose v Wade, will be a major source of tension, division, violence and aggressive political activism.
Some church denominations will disavow Christians who refuse to compromise calling them a lawless minority, an intolerant fringe element of Christianity. The New Testament introduces the gift of prophecy to the Church. This is a special gift of the Holy Spirit, and is just one aspect of prophecy. It is not the sum total of prophecy, but it is a significant part.? As we will see, it is right to emphasise this gift – but not to the exclusion of the other aspects of prophecy.

We learn about this gift in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14. These chapters are set in the context of teaching about public worship, especially the Lord?s Supper; this suggests that the gift of prophecy is the aspect of prophecy which is particularly relevant to the church?s public meetings.
The key Greek verb of 1 Corinthians 14 is oikodomeo. This is usually translated as ?to edify?, but it literally means ?to build together in order to build up?. If we long for the Church to be built together and built up, we should pay special attention to this chapter.

Be zealous for prophecy

1 Corinthians 14:1, 12 & 39 instruct believers actively to zeloo for prophecy. This is a strong Greek verb which means ?to have great zeal?, or ?to crave?.
If we long for God to speak, we will make listening to him a higher priority. We do not demonstrate our ?craving? for prophecy by asking God to speak; we evidence it by listening to him more zealously – because we know that it is his will and nature to reveal his Word to us.

Prophecy addresses people

1 Corinthians 14:3 shows that the essential direction of the gift of prophecy is from God to people.
When the words of our God-ward prayers and worship are truly inspired by the Spirit, it is not wrong to describe them as ?prophetic?. This passage, however, deals with that aspect of prophecy – the spiritual gift – which is entirely human-ward in direction.
In the past, some churches failed to distinguish between diermeneuo, ?to interpret?, and propheteuo ?to prophesy?. 1 Corinthians 14:5 shows that tongues and interpretation is of equal value to prophecy, but that it is not the equivalent of prophecy. Both gifts build the Church, but verses 2-3 show that they do this from opposite directions.
Whenever we pray in tongues, or interpret a tongue, or manifest any spiritual gift, there is some element of prophetic speaking – for we have listened to God and are speaking his words in gospel obedience. But we are not exercising the particular ?gift? of prophecy – for this is the exclusively human-ward element within the broad topic of prophecy.
?

Prophecy builds, exhorts and comforts:

1 Corinthians 14:3 shows that the gift of prophecy brings:

oikodome ? ?edification?: the gift is positive, not negative; it builds us together to build us up in the Church

paraklesis ? ?exhortation?: it reveals what God is doing and calls us to fall in step with this, to come alongside God in what he is doing

paramuthia ? ?comfort?: it is ?near speech?; it is God whispering a tender message of comfort to friends and servants.

Prophecy builds others

Prophecy is a self-giving, self-emptying gift. 1 Corinthians 14:4 states that those who prophesy do not aim to build themselves up; instead, they build together and build up the members of the church. (Of course, as part of the church, they are themselves built up by their prophesying – but this is not their intention.)
Prophecy is a positive, constructive gift; it does not destroy or knock down. This is emphasised in verse 26.

Prophecy is important

1 Corinthians 14:5 shows that prophecy is important, and that we must not treat it casually. We are called to respect those men and women to whom God has entrusted a particular message for that occasion.

Prophecy is not necessarily spontaneous

1 Corinthians 14:26 suggests that the members of the church should spend time carefully preparing themselves for the services, listening to God for any contribution he wishes them to bring to the worship.
This means that any spiritual contribution – a song, talk, tongue, interpretation, prophecy, and so on – can be given by the Spirit in advance.? 1 Corinthians 14:30 shows, however, that there is a real place for spontaneous prophecy in public worship.

Prophecy is revelatory

1 Corinthians 14:26 lists apokalupsis among the contributions that believers can bring to a service. This is usually translated as ?revelation? and means the unveiling, the revealing, of something which had previously been unknown: it clearly refers to prophecies.
Thus far, we have referred to prophecy as the ?now? Word of God. Apokalupsis means that we can, perhaps, also describe prophecy as the ?new? Word of God.
Of course, no prophecy is ever new to God; it is always utterly consistent with the nature and Word of God as expressed in Scripture and in line with the witness of Jesus. At times, however, a prophetic revelation will be new to us – in the sense that it is a fresh unveiling of one aspect of the eternal, unchanging Word.

Prophecy must be judged

1 Corinthians 14:29-32 makes it clear that prophecy must be judged or tested. We consider this in Part Eight.
?

Prophecy is for every believer

1 Corinthians 14:31 stresses that this gift is for all believers. Since Pentecost, all who have been anointed with the Spirit – who keep on listening to God and responding with gospel obedience – can prophecy. This will happen when churches start to be zealous for prophecy – and when they evidence this by making prophetic listening a higher priority.

Decently and in order

1 Corinthians 14:40 teaches that ?all things? – including the gift of prophecy – must be done with:

euschemonos? ?decently?: this means we should prophecy with beauty, or gracefully, and not in an uncontrolled or unhelpful manner

taxis ? ?order?: this means our services should have an order, a deliberate arrangement, with a proper, appropriate and recognised place for ?all things? – including prophecy. This taxis can be arranged by the leader with the help of the gift of wisdom.

Other revelation gifts

1 Corinthians 12-14 refers to three other gifts which God gives to provide us with prophetic revelation, or ?spiritual eyesight?.

?

The word of knowledge

Through this gift, the Spirit reveals facts to us about a person or situation. This is not insight which comes through the natural mind, reason, experience or instinct; instead, it is a freely-given fragment of God?s own knowledge.
By this gift, God discloses a truth which the Spirit wishes to be made known.? We see this, for example, in 2 Kings 5:20-27; 6:9-12; 2 Samuel 12:1-7; Matthew 9:1-7; 17:27; John 4:7-25; 4:45-54; Acts 5:1-6 & 9:11.

The word of wisdom

This gift is the Spirit-given insight as to how a revelation should be best applied in a specific situation, or how a particular person or situation is best helped.
We can say that the word of wisdom is the Spirit?s ?how? and the word of knowledge is his ?what?.? We see examples of this gift in: Genesis 41:14-45; 1 Kings 3:16-28; 2 Kings 5:8-14; Matthew 21:23-27; 22:15-22; Luke 21:15 & John 8:7.

The discerning of spirits

This is the God-given perception which enables a believer to identify the motivating spirit behind particular words or deeds: it helps us to grasp the involvement of the human spirit, a demonic spirit and the Holy Spirit.? We see this, for example, in 1 Samuel 3:1-9; 16:6-13; Matthew 16:21-23; Luke 13:10-17; Acts 5:1-11; 8:14-24; 13:4-12 & 16:16-18.
We consider the special part that this gift plays in the judging of prophecy in Part Eight.

Let prophetic gifts happen
Prophetic revelation and insight, including the gift of prophecy, built the early church – and it still builds the Church today.
If ?Church-building? is our heart?s desire, we will follow 1 Corinthians 14:40 and allow the revelation gifts to ginomai. This is usually translated as ?be done?, but ?become?, or ?come into being?, or ?happen? is more accurate.

We do not worship a dumb God. There is no gag in his mouth. We do not need to implore him to speak. Instead, we must extract the spiritual cotton wool from our ears which blocks out his voice and start listening to him with greater care and intensity.

Jesus, the Lion of Judah

Christianity is a faith rooted in history. Nowhere is this seen more clearly than in the birth of Christ. Born into our world of space and time, God showed Himself in history. The facts are well known. Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the Great, who was King of Judea from 37 – 4 BC, during the reign of the Roman Emperor, Augustus.
Also, God has shown us through the Incarnation (meaning God-in-flesh) that He is not a God “out there’ who is uninvolved in His world. He is deeply concerned about His creation. This concern moved Him to be born into the world and, apart from sin, experience the same joys and sorrows and the same pleasures and pains that we experience. Never again can humankind ask, “Where is God?” or “What is He like?” God has been seen and handled (1 John 1:1). The Son has made Him known (John 1:18).
Furthermore, every day of the life of the incarnate Son of God was a word about humanity. This is humanity as it was meant to be. Through the incarnation, God has sanctified our life on earth and shown that it is possible to be both holy and human.
A MYSTERY
At the same time, the Incarnation itself raises questions that cannot be adequately explained. Attempts to formulate tidy explanations have consistently failed, often ending in heresy and disaster. Man’s mind is unable to grasp fully the truth of God. The Incarnation is a mystery. How can the infinite God be contained in the finite form of a man? How can He become man and yet stay God? How can the feeble foetus in the womb of the virgin girl be the Mighty God or the Everlasting Father? The how we cannot grasp, but we must and do believe the facts revealed in the Word of God.

A painting of Jesus

Our rightful response is that of faith. We believe, we accept and we bow before the sublime revelation of God in Christ. Leaving aside needless speculation we humble our hearts and, in worship and adoration, fall down before the One who humbled Himself to come as a man into our world.
On the other hand, we must take care not to fall into the trap of letting what we do not know spoil what we do. Although there remains much that we cannot understand, we are able to appreciate what God has made clear to us. The Scriptures have a lot to say about the Incarnation.

The incarnation was predicted in the Old testament

THE INCARNATION PREDICTED – OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
The coming of Christ did not happen suddenly and without preparation. As in everything, God was working to His timetable and saw to it that Christ came in the fullness of time (Galatians 4:4). For many centuries God was working through Israel and the events of world history until the climax broke at the coming of Christ. Part of the preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ involved the giving of numerous Old Testament prophecies which predicted the Incarnation in one form or another.
THE OFFSPRING OF THE WOMAN
The first of these was given in the midst of the surrounding gloom that was a result of the fall of man. In Genesis 3:15, God promises that the offspring of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. This is the first ray of hope beaming from God to man in his desperate condition.
A PROPHET LIKE MOSES
Another significant prediction is found in Deuteronomy 18:15. A prophet, whom God likens to Moses, was to come from among the nation of Israel. This was not fulfilled during Moses’ lifetime (see Deuteronomy 34 v 10-12), and by the time of Christ, the hope of this prediction was still held very firmly (see John 1:21 and John 6:14). It appears that in the minds of the first century Jews, there was some connection between this long-awaited prophet and the promised Messiah. In Acts 3: 22; Peter confirms that the coming of Jesus was in fulfilment of ancient prophecy.
BORN TO BE KING
“Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1). This was the question put to Herod by those who came from the East in search of the new-born Christ child. Herod’s jealousy caused him to consult the chief priests and teachers of the law about the predicted birthplace of the Messiah. His aim was to seek out and destroy this potential rival to the throne.
The reply was unanimous, for the prophet Micah, over 500 years before, had accurately described the birthplace of the Messiah: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah . . . out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel’ (Micah 5:2 NIV and Matthew 2: 5 – 6).
The birth of Christ had brought to an end many centuries of waiting in expectation for the arrival of the promised King of Israel. A promise had been given in 2 Samuel 7, of one who would come as God’s appointed leader to govern His people. This King was to be known as the “Anointed One’ or “Messiah’.
A CHILD IS BORN
In Isaiah 9:6 there is a startling prediction that describes the coming of Christ in the familiar language of the Christmas story: “For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given.’ This verse is found in the middle of a description of the promised ruler governing in victory. His rule is said to be a rule of peace. It will be unlimited in its sphere of influence. Justice and righteousness will flow from this eternal rule (see Isaiah 9:1 – 7). This ruler is called “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (v 6)’. At the same time the prophecy describes how this One, whose shoulders will carry the very government of God, will come in the first place as a child!
Matthew quotes this prophecy showing how it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ (See Matthew 4 v 13 – 16).
IMMANUEL – GOD WITH US
In Isaiah 7 v 10 – 18, Isaiah the prophet promises Ahaz the king of Judah that the Lord would give him a sign that the alliance between Syria and Israel would fail. The sign was as follows: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel’ (Isaiah 7 v 14).
This was a prophecy which was given, in the first instance, for the historical situation of that day. Matthew in his gospel, however, shows how these words were literally fulfilled in the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:22 – 23).
BORN OF A VIRGIN
It is a deeply significant fact that Christ was born of a virgin girl. It highlights His uniqueness having been born in this unique way. The infant Jesus was not conceived through a human father but by the miraculous operation of the Holy Spirit (see Matthew 1:18 – 23). Luke agrees and records the words of the angel to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, so the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God’ (Luke 1:35). This was a clear testimony to the fact that the child was to be special. It was God’s attestation to the arrival of the Son of God into the world.
HOW JESUS CAME
THE WORD BECAME FLESH
In John 1 v 14 we read “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us’. This is how Jesus came into the world. The Eternal Word became man. Although this description is short, it tells us a great deal. It emphasises the complete manhood of the Incarnate Christ. He who was fully God now became man in the fullest sense. The contrast between the two modes of existence is stark. The Word was now frail flesh. The Word “became’ emphasises the completeness of this act. It took place at a definite point in time. It does not mean that the Word changed into man, but that the Word took upon Himself the nature of humanity. Human nature was added to the already existing divine nature of the Word. The result was that the Creator of all things dwelt amongst His creatures. The Infinite God in the person of the divine Word lived, a Man among men.
HE MADE HIMSELF NOTHING
The act of the Incarnation is also described by the Apostle Paul. In Philippians 2:7, he writes that Christ “made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.’
The personal cost of the Incarnation is summed up in the statement “He made Himself nothing…’ In 2 Corinthians 8 v 9, Paul describes it like this: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich’. His Incarnation was an act in which He shed the outward display of His glory. Christ felt this loss keenly and looked forward to repossessing it after His crucifixion (see John 17:5).
MAN FOREVER
The New Testament teaches that the Incarnation has become the new permanent mode of existence for the Son of God. This is a staggering thought. Christ died a man, was raised a man, and now lives forever as a man glorified at the Father’s right hand. In Colossians 2:9, Paul describes the present condition of Christ: “For in Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form’. The book of Hebrews emphasises the fact that Christ, as our heavenly High Priest is also man. “He is our Mediator – the Man Christ Jesus’ (1 Timothy 2: 5).
As a man, He is the Head of a new humanity, the Firstborn from among the dead (Colossians 1:18). He has been made like His brothers in every way (Hebrews 2:17). Therefore, God fulfils His purpose of bringing many sons to glory through Him, the great human pioneer of their salvation (Hebrews 2:10).
WHY JESUS CAME
The gospel shows why it was necessary for the Son of God to become man. He had to come in this way in order to fulfil His role as Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5 – 6). As the Incarnate Word, He revealed God to us in a clear and tangible form (John 1:14 & 18). Because He was human He could suffer and die for our sins (Colossians 1: 2; Hebrews 2:9 & 14; 1 Peter 2 v 24). As man He could be the last Adam, the Head of the new redeemed humanity (Romans 5:15 – 19; 1 Corinthians 15:22 & 45). Through His experiences as a man on earth He could become our Great High Priest in heaven. Because He has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet without sin, He is able to sympathise in our weakness and help us in our times of temptation (Hebrews 2:17 & 18; 4:15 – 16).
Because these things are so, to reject the Incarnation is to reject a cardinal truth or orthodox Christianity (1 John 4:2 – 3). Without it there could have been no cross and therefore, no salvation. Furthermore, the doctrine has its relevance for Christian conduct. For, to accept the Incarnation as taught in the New Testament is to find a key to living for God. The revelation of God Incarnate revives in all true believers a sense of wonder and marvel at divine grace and a desire to godly lives. After all, who can gaze for long at the “glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ’, and not be dazzled at its brilliance? Or, who can meditate on “God manifested in the flesh’ and not soon himself be awakened to a life of godliness?
A word that God gave me about what is happening in the spiritual realm right now, and on the plans ans strategies of the enemy. It is a spirit of deception to draw people away from Christ as the only solution. It is coming like a wind, and what we have seen on our streets last week is only the physical manifestation of a spiritual reality.
A strategy of the enemy is being released against our nation. It is a spirit of deception whose purpose is to shake people’s confidence to draw them away from Christ as the only solution. It is very subtle and comes like a wind who is going to sift God’s people.
Sift yourselves now! So when this comes, you will be already sifted!
