Conference
This conference attracted 80 leaders and members from several churches in and around Harare. They have been battered by the Covid Lockdown, the fragile economy and the difficult social situation in Zimbabwe. Encouraging the leaders and their churches was a main focus. However, their hunger for God and desire to expand through re-vitalised cell ministry meant that I was able to deliver strong teaching and impartation of the Cell Vision.

There was also a strong prophetic and apostolic impartation to the leaders which will also affect the spiritual atmosphere in Harare. There was a stirring of the fires of evangelism and intercession.

The people are hungry for God and are holding firm despite many casualties of the Covid Lockdown. Many churches have lost members to other ministries and to the world. There is a sense of re-pioneering in the air.

The pastors, Chivimbisu and Clara Ngowe are stalwarts and filled with vision. They have next to no resources and the people they are reaching are poor, or without substantial income.

Colin, Bishop and Pastor Ngowe

Follow Up
A group has been formed of those wanting to develop the Cell Vision. They keep contact through WhatsApp and that is a vehicle we can use to provide on-going teaching and mentoring.

There is a need for the cell publications and other books helpful to the ministry. We must explore means of inexpensive transportation of bulk quantities of books. This is urgent.

They are already talking about another conference next year, and if I do respond to this desire, I would like to have a small team with me, so that we can diversify the sessions and perhaps do a mini encounter with the church.

PRAY FOR THIS ON-GOING MISSION

Emerson greeted me at Curitiba Airport, helped me with my bags and said, “This is how it all began!” Emerson now is very well-known and highly-respected in Brazil and helped mail out a gospel book by Reinhard Bonnke to 1 million pastors and leaders across Latin America. Now, many years later, Willians is teaching the Sword of the Spirit training programme in Sao Paulo. Sandra has powerful prophetic ministry and witnesses numerous miracles.

Recently, I spent a day visiting this free medical clinic for refugees and displaced people in Amman, Jordan.

First registered in Jordan in 1927, it was renewed in 1953 following the establishment of Israel in 1948.

Founded by Pr. Albert Hashweh Snr. Who, along with his family, came to Jordan as refugees from Palestine in 1947. The Hashweh family is well-known in Jordan for their Christian and humanitarian service to the many thousands of refugees present in Jordan following the conflicts in Kuwait, Iraq and the more recent unrest in Syria.

The church building was erected in 1988 the year before Pastor Albert passed away.

Christian Missionary & Alliance Church in Amman

Pastor Albert’s son, Yousef Hashweh is the Pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Amman, Jordan and since 1990, has worked extensively with refugees from up to 22 different nations in the Hope Clinic, English Language teaching, and refugee support, counselling and food aid.

Pastor Yousef Hashweh

Another son of Albert, Jamal Hashweh also works with refugees and hosts 5 hubs in Jordan where refugees mainly from Iraq, Syria and Sudan. The centres provide food parcels, friendship, micro industry or trade training and receive encouragement and support.

Victor Hashweh, son of Albert Hashweh, is well-known in the region for his work among displaced peoples as well as his translation work for the UN. He provides Christian teaching on Marriage and the Family and Christian growth and discipleship.

HOPE CLINIC

There are some 1 million refugees in Jordan from Syria, Iraq and other nations. Without work or income they rely on voluntary groups for any help they can obtain – food, accommodation and medical care. The Christian and Missionary Alliance in Amman is one group providing help for refugees. They care for families, offering support and food. They also run the Hope Medical clinic, open two days a week staffed by volunteer medical staff. They provide free medical care for up to 80 people and families each week. Everything from pregnancy care to PTSD counselling is covered, but above all, the Hope Clinic is a place where people can be heard, valued and included.

MEDICAL CARE-SUPPORT- FOOD AID

Without work or income, Syrian and Iraqi refugees desperate for medical attention. The Christian & Missionary Alliance church provide care for 80 patients and families each week.

TRAUMA COUNSELLING

Refuges from neighbouring nations have lost families, income, homes and hope. Doctors, nurses and counsellors offer counselling and compassion.

“We had a moving meeting with Iraqi refugees whose emotional stories brought tears to our eyes. At the end of the meeting every one of them prayed to receive Jesus in their hearts. We had lunch with them while my brother Jamal handed each refugee a foodstuff parcel.”

In April 2020 Amanda and I visited the Love in Action refugee project in Amman Jordan. There we met up with Jamal Hashweh.

Jamal is from a refugee family himself. He knows what it is to have to leave his country, his home and come to a foreign place to start all over again. He explains, “When we visit refugees in their scant accommodation, we tell them we’ve been through it. We understand.”

In the last 30 years 2 to 3 million refugees have flooded into Jordan from Iraq, Syria and other neighbouring countries. Around 1 million remain to this day. They have left everything and now have nothing. They receive very little official help. Voluntary agencies such as Love in Action do what they can to assist.

The centre supplies regular food parcels for families who have little or no food. There are classes to teach language skills and offer other vocational training to help re-establish dignity and step towards self-sufficiency.

Jamal continues, “As we show them love in action, not only by words but by caring for them, praying for them, visiting them in their homes. We try to help as much as possible.”

The Love in Action Centre is open to all, both those from Christian and Muslim backgrounds as well as those who have no religion.

The center is in a neigbourhood of Amman where thousands of refugee families are housed. Most of them are in desperate need for essentials. Jamal is grateful for the provision of the refugee centre, “The Lord gave us this place, a kind of shelter, where people can come and enjoy a time of peace, get some trauma counselling and get some spiritual message. Also to learn some skills that will enable them to become self-sustaining.”

Jamal envisions having many more centres built on the model of showing Jesus’ love in action.

Concluding Jamal says, “Thank you for praying for us. Thank you for all you can do with us. This ministry is for Him, for his glory.”

Please do what you can to support this worthy cause.

A Guardian Newspaper article on 3 March, 2022 showed the difficult and often brutal conditions of young offenders in Brazil’s overcrowded juvenile detention centres:

Under existing law, offenders aged 12 to 18 are supposed to be dealt with through community service or education, with a maximum penalty of up to three years at a detention centre for the most serious crimes. In reality, however, young people who commit minor infractions are often locked up in overcrowded facilities with scant opportunity for rehabilitation and education, or protection from mistreatment, claim campaigners.

According to Human Rights Watch, in 2014 about 22,000 young people in Brazil were housed at juvenile detention centres, which were designed to hold a maximum of 18,000. But overcrowding is just one aspect of a regime that inspections have found to be brutal, with youths locked up for hours in cell-like rooms with few opportunities for recreation – conditions that have triggered frequent riots.

Free My Verse Project

Biorki, a successful Rap Artist from São Paulo State regularly visits juvenile detention centres to inspire them to take up writing and performing rap music as a form of self-expression.

A key member of our PULSO youth programme in Brazil, Biorki has performed at many of our youth events and also appeared on our discussion panels, presenting Christ in a contemporary way. It is impossible to overstate the effect he is having on the young people he encounters both inside and outside prisons.

Without such interventions, rehabilitation is almost impossible within the current penal system in Brazil.

“It is marvellous to see these young people previously without hope begin to grow in their self-esteem”, Biorki commented. But he does need our support, in prayer and in finance.

Here is Biorki’s report:

The return to activities in the juvenile detention centre in the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2020 took place on the 25th of February. The planned date was 15th January, but we were delayed due to the change of management in J.L.A. (the unit where we carry out the project).

We started with a group of 10 teenagers and now we’re going into our third class, with 10 adolescents in each class.

In the first 3 weeks, we started the first stage of the project, which is a reading incentive to improve the writing skills that will be needed in the workshops.

Each member of the group started reading a book, despite the fact that the J.L.A. does not offer a large selection of books in line with the teenagers’ language and context.

After some exercises in writing, rhyming and verses, we started discussion on the theme chosen by adolescents (feelings). The discussion and reflection on the topic addressed is always very important, because this is where the change in the way of thinking and seeing their story will happen. The workshops build on this.

We are now entering the next week going into the song writing process, including the two new classes.

Next week, we are also organising an event at the unit, with some names from the Rio rap scene. We are currently making the contacts and raising the funds to be able to take a high impact group of artists to talk and perform live to the teenagers.
