BEYOND GAZA â€“ will there be peace?

2024 PROPHETIC POINTERS
At the beginning of 2023 I posted some prophetic pointers, Navigating 2023. I now offer some thoughts and insights which may be suggestive of the year ahead.

In January 2023 I wrote:

God is shaking the nations so that his kingdom will manifest. Godâ€™s kingdom cannot be shaken. It is our one stability in an unstable world. The forces of Chaos will not overcome Godâ€™s people.

We certainly saw the forces of Chaos at work in 2023. â€œChaosâ€ became the go-to word for journalists reporting on national and global affairs. God was at work permitting Chaos, partially in judgement, but also in grace. He allows chaos to manifest to show his displeasure toward sin and the inevitable results of human rebellion. The eruption of Chaos challenges every earthly society and system of government in order that the nations might seek the Kingdom of God, the only Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

We are now in a time of grave international conflict. The Russian war in Ukraine continues to rage. The despicable Hamas attack on Israel of 10/7 in 2023 provoked the Israel-Gaza war. Both these conflicts will continue to play out in 2024. The global geo-political and geo-spiritual implications of these wars remains to be seen. International pressure coupled with high level diplomacy no doubt will eventually bring some form of peace, but the world will be a different place. Further eruptions and escalation of conflict appear likely. The spiritual forces behind the eruption of hostilities will not rest.

Behind the disruption lie dark spiritual powers intent on opposing Godâ€™s original plan, his Eden project. Godâ€™s plan is to bring all things into conformity to his nature and will, fully manifesting his glory on earth as in heaven. Ultimately, he will recreate humanity and the entire cosmos bringing us back to Eden, the original creation plan. In the meantime, Godâ€™s mandate to Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply and to spread the conditions of Eden to the whole earth, has never been rescinded. We fulfil this mandate today by praying, preaching, and reaching out to the lost and hurting, by living our lives in line with Godâ€™s will.

The global community of Christian believers is made of up of both Jews and Gentiles united in Christ. We are the only beacon of ultimate hope in a lost, confused and increasingly violent world. But we must rise up and fearlessly live for God, passionately cling to him and uncompromisingly proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ to the nations.

The conditions of war create both challenges and opportunities for the gospel. Reports are coming in from Gaza that suggest some Palestinians are turning away from Islam, disillusioned by harsh treatment under Hamas. Christian war aid and support for the Jewish people has been a welcome contrast to increasing antisemitism in the West. These open doors of opportunity for the gospel. But that is not the whole story. Islamic fundamentalism is also rising, spurred on by the perception that not just terrorism, but Islam itself is under attack. New barriers to the gospel are evident as both Jews and Muslims feel the war in Gaza presents an existential threat.

Israelis, whose close neighbours are committed to the extinction of the State of Israel find it difficult to accept the Christian message. Attempts to convert them appear to be yet another attack on their Jewish identity. I suspect that alongside the opportunities for the gospel in the Middle East, we will encounter both Jews and Muslims whose hearts have been hardened by recent events. The Palestinian/Islamic narrative is increasingly accepted by many in the West. It is going to become harder to present Christ to both Western and Middle Eastern nations. Islam is not just opposed to Jews but is also hostile to Christians. This will become even more clear in the weeks and months that lie ahead.

But the good news is that the message of the New Covenant, originally promised by God for Israel, also includes the Gentiles. Jews and Muslims, together with those of all religions, and none, are universally invited to know God and to touch his glory in the person of Christ. Gospel fullness will eventually include both Israel and all nations. This is the broader prophetic context in which we should discern what is taking place now and what will unfold in the year ahead.

Colin Dye shares his recent mission to Brazil.

In October 2021, Amanda and I were set apart by KT for the work of missions. Following the leading of the Spirit, we have visited at least 12 nations averaging one mission per month.

Wherever we go, we are greeted by former KT members and leaders. Often these people are key players in the work we do outside the UK. The recent mission to Brazil found us working with Emerson Rocha, Leyff Wenderson and Willians and Sandra Barbosa, all previous leaders within the London City Church, KT Network.

â€œMy time in the KT Brazilian fellowship and IBIOL was both the foundation and inspiration of my ministry. It is so good to be reconnected with Colin.â€

Leyff was a student at IBIOL 25 years ago and now leads a church in Effingham, Illinois. He is a powerful evangelist with a strong healing ministry. Together, in Sao Paulo and Curitba we saw deaf and blind people healed, and as well as those with significant mobility challenges. Many people made decisions to become followers of Christ.

â€œHaving finished at IBIOL, I was Colinâ€™s assistant for 2 years. Now I lead CfAN in Brazil. London was my home for several years, and KT is where I would be if the Lord had not called me back to Brazil.â€

Emerson greeted me at Curitiba Airport, helped me with my bags and said, â€œThis is how it all began!â€ Emerson now is very well-known and highly-respected in Brazil and helped mail out a gospel book by Reinhard Bonnke to 1 million pastors and leaders across Latin America. He organised a packed programme for me in some of the largest churches in the region.

Willians and Sandra Barbosa

â€œWe look forward to what God has for us in Brazil and we know that our time in KTLCC was preparing us for what God is doing now.â€
Willians and Sandra helped plant several Brazilian churches in London and also served for many years as overseers in our network. Now, many years later, Willians is teaching the Sword of the Spirit training programme in Sao Paulo. Sandra has powerful prophetic ministry and witnesses numerous miracles.

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement was banned from preaching in the Anglican churches of his day. That did not stop him. He went on to say, â€œThe world is now my parish.â€ KTâ€™s ministry and influence goes way beyond the boundaries of the M25, reaching through Elim missions and KTâ€™s church-based initiatives.

THE VOICE OF THE PROPHETS

Prophetic ministry will become more prominent and widespread. Both through existing prophetic ministries, but also new prophetic ministries and streams.Â

This is inevitable in a time of national and international crisis. People turn to the prophets when they want to understand what is happening in the world, and especially when they are afraid.Â

God does nothing without first revealing it to his prophets.

FOUR FUNCTIONS OF PROPHECY TODAY

Revelation (Amos 3:7-8)
Encouragement (Ezra 5:1-2)
Direction (2 Chronicles 20:20)
Intercession (Isaiah 62:6-7)

PROPHETIC INTEGRITY

The popularity of the prophetic will attract some who are less sincere and not sent by the Lord. Some will be motivated by a love for fame and a desire for notoriety. This will push them towards extravagant claims and sensational public pronouncements which will attract big audiences but are not actually true.Â

The genuine prophetic ministry is marked by love and respect for the Word of Scripture as well as the manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

There will be accuracy in predictions, genuine repentance and hunger for righteousness. There will be many personal encounters with Christ and angelic messengers. Many will begin to experience spiritual encounters, open visions and prophetic dreams for the first time.Â

But the enemy will also increase his efforts to deceive, to lead astray and discredit genuine prophecy by sowing confusion. The need for the discernment of the Word and the Spirit will be greater than ever.

Among some, there will be unhealthy preoccupation with apocalyptic messaging coming from deceptive manifestations of dreams, visions, angels and miracles. Speculation will be presented as fact and spurious notions will be reported as divine revelation. This will have the unfortunate effect of distracting attention from the genuine supernatural revelation that God is giving to the true prophets among us.Â

There will be increasingly alarmist conspiracy reports as well as sensational claims about Antichrist, the mark of the Beast and the Second Coming of Christ. Many will adopt dogmatic or extreme teaching about the Last Days to gain a following and make a name for themselves, but this will lead people astray and distract them from the real tasks of our generation â€“ prayer, evangelism, church fellowship, pursuit of truth, love and good works.Â

There will be a tendency to prophesy hastily about revival and signs and wonders without laying the groundwork of repentance and prayer. But there will be examples of sudden and unexpected pockets of â€˜revival-typeâ€™ blessing in various places. These will emphasise salvation, signs and wonders, and small-group discipleship.Â

God is calling us to set our prophetic house in order.

Discipline and accountability in prophetic utterances must be restored as well as a â€˜back to basicsâ€™ approach to biblical teaching about the prophetic gift and its function in the church and in society.

There needs to be a greater coming together of all the ministries in teams, networks and collaborative connections. Apostles and Prophets, as well as Pastors, Teachers and Evangelists, must work more closely together, respecting and understanding one anotherâ€™s ministries.

The God who watches over his Word

It is time to receive from God with a child-like Faith

“I am watching over my Word to perform it” (Jeremiah 1:12).?When God speaks a word over your life, he watches over it until the time of its fulfilment. In this prophetic season many are nurturing promises given to them by God years ago. It is time to bring these out again and, together with the Holy Spirit, keep watch over them. That’s how we partner with the Holy Spirit in the fulfilment of God’s prophetic word to us.

God’s Word is living and active. It is a moving, breathing word because it is spoken by his living breath – the Spirit of God! Paul says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (God-breathed), and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Notice he says “The Scripture is God-breathed”; not, “was God-breathed”. God’s word always IS. It is being carried upon God’s breath. What he spoke in years gone by – is still being spoken. Not a single word is lost or forgotten.

God says he is watching over the word he has given you: “I am watching over it; like a hen broods over her eggs”. The Hebrew word is shaqad which means “to be alert, to be awake, to be on the lookout”. We watch with him as we intercede concerning the word he has spoken over us. We watch with him when we believe that what God has said he has power to fulfil. Every word of God carries within it the power for its own fulfilment. He will never let his word fall to the ground.

Have you heard a word from the Lord, maybe recently, or perhaps many years ago? God has not forgotten what he said to you. It is time to bring that word before him and hold onto it with complete confidence that what he has promised he will fulfil.

I have a feeling that many of us are entering into a time of prophetic fulfilment. Keep that word fresh. Believe it. Proclaim it. Intercede over it. And wait for it – it will surely come!

How to listen to God?

How to listen to God?

He listens to us and we listen to him; he speaks to us and we speak to him; he gives himself to us and we give ourselves to him. If we do not keep on listening to God, we may be able to know the triune God propositionally, but we will never know the Father, the Son and the Spirit personally and relationally.
The devil attempts to deceive believers by suggesting a variety of lies – many of which are based on the idea that listening to God is an occasional action rather than a life-long activity.

So what is listening to God? It is…

Active not passive – we do not listen to God like we listen to a piece of music – to be entertained; instead, we listen to him like a trainee pilot listens to his instructor – to be directed.
Relational not functional – we do not listen to God like we listen to a useful but anonymous helpline operator; rather, we listen to him like children listen to their parents.
Continuous not occasional – we do not listen to God like we listen to the radio, as-and-when we choose; instead, we listen to him continuously: we listen to God, we do not listen out for God.
Rooted in the prophetic – we listen to God like the prophets of old, in an intimate, anointed, servant relationship, ready to act on God?s words.

The living God who speaks his mind and counsel to us is the same mighty God who made humanity in his image and dealt in grace with the Patriarchs. He is the God who parted the Red Sea, provided the Law, and protected his people in the wilderness; who smote Jericho, Goliath and Sennacherib; who sent fire to Carmel and shut the lions? mouths; who came in the flesh, sacrificed his Son, raised him from the dead and poured his Spirit onto the Church.
This is the great God who speaks today to us – personally, privately, specifically, lovingly, graciously and continuously. We must take care, however, that our confidence in his will and willingness to speak does not lapse into presumption, over-familiarity and complacency.
One essential foundation of all prophetic listening is a deep sense of genuine awe at the thought of the living, loving God actually communicating with us. We simply must recognise, realise and remember who it is to whom we are listening.
Give me a hearing heart!
Listening to God is a continuous process: we can express this in a different way by saying that we should develop a ?listening lifestyle? or a ?hearing heart? – for listening to God is fundamental to the believer?s life of faith.
1 Kings 3:4-14 describes how God spoke to Solomon in a dream and offered him anything he asked. 1 Kings 3:9 reports that the new king asked for an ?understanding heart? so that he could ?discern between good and evil?.
Although the Hebrew word bin can be translated as ?understanding? or ?discerning?, it points to a continuous receiving or hearing of God?s understanding rather than to a once-and-for-all gift of wisdom. This means that Solomon was asking for a hearing heart rather than for encyclopaedic knowledge or a miraculous store of wisdom. This is why God was so pleased with Solomon?s request.
In John 14:13, Jesus speaks to us in much the same way that God spoke to Solomon, promising us whatever we ask in his name. Surely no request is more in keeping with Jesus? words in John 14-16 than a plea for a ?hearing heart?.
As we move on to examine different aspects of the biblical teaching about God?s forth-speaking and our prophetic listening, we will do well to ask God to give us a hearing heart – and we should then go on to do all that we can to develop this holy attitude in our lives.
