The fifth mark of revival in your life is an intense spiritual desire. Many of us do not know the kind of hunger for God that the writers of the Bible experienced. David writes in Psalm 42 “My soul pants for you”. Whenever we are physically hungry, we know that our senses immediately begin to revolve around our physical need – other things are forgotten.

Spiritual desire operates the same way. When our first love is restored everything else will seem less important. Our perspectives and priorities will change. This kind of focus may seem rare, but it’s God’s plan for all of us. He wants first place in our lives and nothing less.

The Good or the Best?

Many of our desires are not wrong. They are simply the way we express human vitality. God delights to meet our needs and he also delights to bless us extravagantly. But problems arise when we let his gifts take all our attention. This can happen over time, and can often be deceptive. Suddenly in revival we wake up to the fact that we have become preoccupied with secondary things that have kept us away from Him. Then our human desires give way to the most important thing, which is to know God. Being with him, seeking his holiness and glory become the primary goals in your life. Nothing else really matters anymore.

Retaining Relationship

If you missed a close friend then your desire for them would not be vague – you would miss particular things about them. When we desire for God there are clear things we want in our lives. We want righteousness – the freedom to be who we were created to be. We want our prayer life to carry a fresh passion. We cannot stay away from the Bible. We delight in godly disciplines. Our hearts reflect his own and we ache for the lost and become passionate to win souls.

Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount that sin starts in the heart. It is not enough to examine our actions, because they are the result of wrong thinking and wrong desires. The opposite is also true. Correct thinking and having a righteous heart will spur us on to godly action. If your life does not reflect God’s priorities then there is a good chance that the fires of God need to be re-stoked. Seek Him now.

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice that I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, ‘Come up here and I will show you things that must take place after this’. Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven and One sat on the throne.” Revelation 4:1-2

In the last few years, God has blessed our network with some remarkable visitations. We’ve had seasons of Holy laughter, Oil on hands and many revival healings. Yet, as wonderful as these times were, today God wants to lift us into a higher realm – a realm where we will see the throne and the One who sits on it.

He wants the glimpses we have had of His glory to become habitual times in His presence. And so He is stirring up a holy dissatisfaction in His people. He is calling us to new levels – of fellowship and communion, worship and intimacy, wisdom and revelation power. This will bring us to even higher realms of divine disclosure.

Stir up the promises

A door opened in Heaven

What are the things God has spoken to you in the past? What are the promises He made to you when you met Him in prayer? Remember the seasons when you were so anointed that you preached the gospel to your friends and saw them come to Christ? Now is the time to go through your notebooks and remind yourself of these things! Begin to lay hold of everything He has ever spoken to you. It’s only when you learn to maintain what you attain that He will bring you into new things.

Remember Peter in the boat with the other disciples? He is on familiar territory and he’s bored with the ordinary. Then a holy dissatisfaction rises up on the inside of him. And, almost in answer to this holy dissatisfaction, along comes Jesus – walking on the water! What does this do? It forces Peter to sit up and take notice.

Can you see that Jesus did not perform this miracle simply to prove His deity? The key to understanding God’s motivation behind all signs and wonders is found in Mark 6:52, ”They had not understood about the loaves. Just before the disciples saw Jesus walk on water, the feeding of the five thousand had taken place. And they hadn’t understood that this miracle was not just about the provision of bread.

Your Supernatural Calling

Jesus had blessed the bread – but the miracle of increase took place in the hands of the disciples! Jesus was saying to them, ”I have called you to preach the gospel to the poor. This is your calling”. But because they had not understood, Jesus decided to confront them with a level of the supernatural that they couldn’t ignore. He decided to scare heaven into them by walking on the water! He wanted them to know that there is only one way to reach a dead and dying world and that’s through the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.

So what does Peter do in response? He rises to the challenge and says to Jesus, “Lord if it is You, command me come to You on the water”.

In this simple statement he gives us three keys to the miraculous. Firstly, he says, “Lord if it is You”. I predict that in this season of Holy Spirit visitation, the greatest miracles will be done not by the leadership but by all God’s people. Therefore each of us must ask Him what He’s calling us to do in this miracle hour.

Secondly, he says, “Command me.” Peter is offering Jesus his obedience. In matters of the miraculous, obedience is as important as faith. If we are not working in obedience to Him, God is limited in what He can do through us. Thirdly, Peter says, “Command me to come to you”. In other words,” I want to be with you Lord.”

Experience His passion and power

Being with Jesus should be the overriding motive for all that we do. The glory and beauty of the miraculous is that we find Jesus there and experience His power and His compassion.

God wants to restore the supernatural to the church in Britain and Europe. The door open in heaven is for us to see the One who sits on the throne and desire to be with Him. As the Holy Spirit calls us into higher fellowship, we realise that Jesus is the glorious point of it all. Be bold! Go through the open door to be with Jesus, as Peter did, and see the miracles go with you.

Some will teach grace to a limited extent. They agree that we are saved by grace, but they quickly re-introduce the law to ?balance? grace with discipline. But you cannot successfully mix grace with anything ? it must be all grace or it is simply not grace at all. Unlimited grace means that the good we receive from God is totally unmerited and free. If we contribute to our salvation, even in the slightest detail, then grace is no longer grace.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2881" class="size-full wp-image-2881" alt="We are forgiven by grace, accepted by grace, saved by grace, sanctified by grace and we serve by grace. It is grace from start to finish

Grace is not a good offer, a bargain deal or a cheap way of gaining something priceless in itself. For grace to be grace it means we pay nothing. Christ takes full responsibility for 100% of the payment. That is exactly what he achieved for us on the cross. His cry of triumph rings down through the ages, ?It is finished!? No more debt to pay, nothing more to do to qualify for God?s favour. We are now and forever a part of God?s kingdom by faith in Christ.
We are forgiven by grace, accepted by grace, saved by grace, sanctified by grace and we serve by grace. It is grace from start to finish. Think what this means in practice. We love God because he first loved us. We live right because we have been accepted by him and not in order to be accepted by him. We forgive because we have been forgiven, we live free because we have been set free and we serve God because he has served us.
All we do for Christ is based on our response to his grace and not in order to gain his favour. Paul knew this and made one of the most profound grace statements in the entire New Testament when he wrote,
For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
1 Corinthians 15:9-11

People with a Passion, a landmark publication

Paul was the first to admit that in himself he was unworthy before God. No-one disagreed! They were suspicious of his conversion to Christ and outraged that he was now claiming apostleship on the same level as the 12 apostles of Christ. Perhaps you feel completely unworthy and inadequate when it comes to the challenge of the cell vision. Maybe you have to face both internal and external doubts about your suitability to serve Jesus. Look how Paul dealt with it.
He was as amazed as everybody else, absolutely blown away by the kindness of God in taking a self-righteous, bigoted and arrogant persecutor of Christ, and making him the primary New Testament apostle to the Gentiles. All he could say was ?I am what I am by the grace of God.? He owed it all to Christ. We must learn the same lesson. Only when we are equally overwhelmed by the mercy and grace God has shown to us will we be ready to serve him willingly and joyfully. Only then will we be willing to take on something as radical and demanding as the cell vision.
From the book “People with a passion“, by Colin Dye.

Mel Gibson?s The Passion of the Christ shook the world in 2004 with its depiction of the sufferings and crucifixion of Christ. Accused by the press for anti-Semitism and for portraying the barbarism inflicted on Christ too explicitly, Gibson defended himself. He affirmed the theological truth that neither the Jews nor the Romans crucified Jesus ? we did! The agonising scene portraying the Roman crucifixion included a close-up of Mel Gibson?s hands hammering the nails through Jesus? hands and feet ? Gibson?s testimony to the fact that it was his sins along with those of all humanity that crucified Christ.

The Cross inspires us to live passionately for gOD

There is no doubt that The Passion of the Christ is an extremely graphic film, but to students of the cruel practice of crucifixion and the public scourging that went before it, know that Gibson actually played down the gruesome reality of Christ?s Passion. As it is, especially in the more adult version of the film, there is much blood. So much in fact, that one man who I was seeking to lead to Christ at the time, complained. ?There?s too much blood in the film?, he said, ?What?s with you Christians? You are so fixated on blood!? He was clearly repulsed by the visual images depicting Christ?s suffering. It was neither the Jews nor the Romans that crucified Christ; it was my sins along with those of all humanity.
The irony was my friend had just been speaking enthusiastically about Tarantino?s Kill Bill 2. Like the first film, it revelled in blood and gore. I pointed out the inconsistency in my friend?s different reactions to Kill Bill 2 and The Passion. Aware that there was something going on beneath the conscious surface of his life, he became silent. It was an important moment of self-awareness for him.
Revulsion at the cross is not unusual. Isaiah the prophet spoke about it 700 years before the Messiah was born. What would he be like when he finally came? Isaiah answers,
He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from him; He was despised, and we did not esteem him. Isaiah 53:3
The Christian faith places the Passion of Christ its centre; it is the summit of God?s redemptive purposes and the highest source of inspiration for every disciple.
The image of Christ would be shaped by his Passion, his sufferings and death. How can the shame, cruelty and sheer disgust of the cross become for Christians our defining moment personally and for humanity as a whole? The worship of a crucified Christ is scandalous and contradictory. Surely we should worship success and victory ? not the inglorious bloodsoaked Christ of the cross. And yet, the Christian faith places the Passion of Christ at the centre. For us, it is the summit of God?s redemptive purposes and the highest source of inspiration for every disciple who is nothing less than a cross-bearing follower of the Christ.
The pieces of this puzzle begin to come together when, by the revelation of the Spirit, we perceive that Christ?s death was neither a violent accident of history nor a cosmic blunder. It was the very plan and express purpose of God for the salvation and restoration of our lives. Turning to Isaiah, once again, we begin to understand. Surely he has borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows Yet we esteemed him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon him, And by his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5 Christ?s death was the plan and purpose of God for the salvation and restoration of our lives.
The gospel hinges on this fact so clearly revealed in the New Testament – Jesus became the substitute sacrifice for the sins of the world. On the cross he paid the price for our total forgiveness by God who is so absolutely holy that he could never tolerate sin. The cross measures God?s unrelenting love for lost humanity, our implacable rebellion against him and the limitless outpouring of his gracious restoration of our lives. I longed for my friend to discover these things. The same is true for all those who have bowed at the foot of the cross in gratitude and amazement at the perfect plan of God. We can never be the same. We have seen too much. We have tasted the goodness of God and we are captivated by such amazing love.
A pastor friend of mine who leads a growing cell church in Australia is one of the most passionate disciples of Christ I know. He is sold out for God and the good news of Jesus. He lives and breathes mission. During one of the very first commercial screenings of The Passion he sat with members of his church mingled with regular cinema goers from Australia?s non religious general public.
When the film ended, a deep, tense silence descended on the audience. No one moved. The pastor, deeply affected by the reality of the movie?s content and the beauty of Gibson?s screen play, jumped to his feet and shouted, ?Jesus! I will follow you anywhere!? The pastor?s passion was palpable and it impacted the entire audience. They were catapulted into transcendent reality like the star ship Enterprise, suddenly boosted to ?warp speed?.
The cross changes everything – the Christ who died and who rose again is the Christ to be followed.
Such is the effect of the cross. It changes everything. It removes the tawdry irrelevancies of our selfcentredness and banishes them to the sidelines of our existence. The Christ who died and who rose again is the Christ to be followed. No one who comes close to the cross could ever fail to hear the heartbeat of God. The Father?s breast throbs with passion for his lost sons and daughters and calls to them from heaven, ?This is my beloved Son. Hear him!?
The cross has shaped countless generations of disciples who wholeheartedly agree with the apostle Paul when he declared, ?For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.? They share his God-inspired passion for Jesus which also led the apostle to say, ?I want to know him, the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death.?
The passion flowing from the cross breeds a like passion in our hearts – the attraction of his sacrificial love compels us to follow him, and we never regret it.
The passion flowing from the cross breeds a like-for-like passion in our hearts. We love him because he first loved us. The gracious gift of his life for us provokes a response – we give him our lives as ?living sacrifices?. The attraction of his sacrificial love compels us to follow him, and we never regret it. He is worth more than the entire world to us.
Disciples are passionate people. Gone is the colourless living in this monochromatic world where the best of worldly achievement and success is empty when compared to the glory being revealed in us. Gone is the preoccupation with self, both secular and religious. Christ is our inspiration and our motivation. We leave behind worldly ambitions. We also reject the religious preoccupation with guilt and condemnation. Clothed with the righteousness of Christ and emboldened by the flame of spiritual passion burning within, we follow him ? no matter what the cost. Passion is intense feeling, it is the fire in our eyes and in our lives that drives us forward.
We all have a basic need to feel passion. That is how God made us as human beings. It seems that the image of God in humanity includes a craving to be passionate about purpose, destiny, beauty, skill and impact. Passion is intense feeling, strong excitement, strong affection, love, intense desire and enthusiasm. Passion is the fire in our eyes, in our bellies and in our lives that drives us forward to achieve the object of our passion. When people lose passion or have no fire in their soul you can tell it right away. They go through their lives as if they are on auto-pilot and the joy seems to have leaked out of them. When people have a passion in life you can see it and feel it. Having passion is a way of living every moment of your life to its fullest. When it comes to having and feeling passion, you know when you have it and you know when you don?t. We all need to decide what we are passionate about having or doing in our life and then be open to doing what we need to do to keep it that way.

Passion lifts you out of the ordinary and the mundane into the realm of the best possibilities of your existence. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw offered insight into the world outside that conformity box where nothing is exciting or alters the world. He wrote ?The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.?
When do you feel most alive, most excited in your life? What do you long for more than anything else? The things you find yourself constantly dreaming about or imagining, will give you some clues as to what your passion is. How you would complete the following sentences reveals where your passion really lies: Wouldn?t it be wonderful if?? If only I could?? What if I found…?
Your passion is that one thing are you most willing to spend your time, your talents, your energy and your efforts to pursue, even if you attain to it only rarely and incompletely. What you believe would give you the most pleasure or the greatest joy, if you attained it in life, is your passion. Your passion energises you, invigorates you and galvanises you into action, even when you are tired, discouraged, criticised or opposed. You continue to long for, pursue, and keep on attempting to attain what you are passionate about, despite constant setbacks and disappointments.
Read the last paragraph again and ask yourself honestly, ?What?s my passion?? The cell vision we have at Kensington Temple calls for people to be passionate about Jesus and his mission. It expects them to centre their lives around Christ and his call on their lives. It champions whole hearted commitment to cell church as the best way of making, maturing and mobilising disciples.
True spiritual passion comes through the activity of the Holy Spirit. It is he who reveals to us the true identity of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God and the true significance of the cross. Without the Holy Spirit we could never discern the loveliness of Jesus or feel the compelling attraction of the cross. The Spirit inspires, energises and sustains our spiritual passion. The Spirit-filled life is a life of passion. The Holy Spirit wants to re-energise Christians, drawing us away from the scandal of mere ?Sunday Christianity?. He wants to transform cold, inactive Christians who lack conviction into radical fire-brands of confidence and boldness, passionate about the kingdom of God.
