Spiritual truths are real

The spiritual realities of God?s kingdom are true, life-affirming and enduring. Spiritual truths, revealed in the Bible and made visible in the life of Christ, are sure and certain. The faith of the Christian is neither a figment of personal imagination nor the product of individual perception. This is reality, not arrogance.
Our faith is solidly anchored in history and provides a reliable connection to truth. The spiritual realm and the truths it contains are real. The rock of God?s revelation in Christ is sure and solid whether people perceive it or not. Truth is truth whether people accept it or reject it.
Society tells us that the physical world is the only real world. It allows us privately to choose whatever we want to believe about Jesus and his call upon our lives. Sometimes we are respected and admired for it, and at other times we are ridiculed. But few will deny us our right to have a personal faith.
The problem begins when our faith begins to challenge others ? when we refuse to keep it private and want to go public with the gospel. As soon as we assert that the gospel is a matter of fact and that our faith is relevant for everyone, we go against the trend. It takes courage to be open about our faith and to attempt to share it with others in our modern society. This contempt for the Christian gospel is set to grow and become even more intense in the future. Pressure will increase from both other religions and from secularism in our generation. How should we react to these things?
The Apostle Peter answers this question. He tells us to be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us. He instructs us to prepare ourselves to make a defense of the gospel when we are questioned about it. I wonder if the average Christian today has heeded this wise instruction.
Recently, I heard about a Christian woman who rejected her faith in order to become a Muslim. There is increasing pressure on Christians today to renounce Christian doctrine and to follow Islam, the ?true religion?. When asked why she had abandoned her Christian faith, she replied, ?I?ve always had a problem with the divinity of Christ.?? She is not alone. Liberal theologians have had a problem with that for decades. Philosophers have had an issue with the notion of the Incarnate Son of God for centuries.
The problem was that this woman had no answer to give to those who were challenging her belief. She had never looked into the issue for herself. Many Christians, like her, do not give attention to the issue of truth and error. They never open the Bible for themselves to see what it really says about the nature and being of God, the revelation of Jesus as Messiah or the meaning of the cross.

Our Faith is not based merely on experience, rather, it is deeply rooted in the truth of the word of God

Many Charismatic and Pentecostal believers (along with other Evangelicals) build their faith on personal experience rather than on truth. Yes, truth must be experienced – it not enough to hold a merely intellectual faith. But our faith is reasonable and the truth of God in Christ is the foundation of our experience. The order is clear. Truth first, experience second. The only reliable test of truth is the revelation of God in his Word ? his personal Word, the Bible and His Personal Word, Christ.
It is a joy to see more Muslims coming to Christ today than at any time in history. Muslims are coming to Christ in Europe, Africa, Asia and in the Middle East. What is it that causes them to abandon the teaching of Mohamed and to come to faith in Christ?
They have come to see the truth in Christ, the one who said, ?I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No-one comes to the Father but by me? (John 14:6). They have come to understand that they need a Saviour, not a prophet. They rejoice in the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins so that we can be forgiven by God. They reject their religion because they discover that truth is not found in any religion but only in a personal relationship with God through Christ.
In short, everyone who is convinced by the Holy Spirit that the truth is found in Christ is convinced by spiritual understanding. They are persuaded by the power of spiritual truth. Because Jesus is the Truth, he can become our Hope.
That?s why the Apostle Peter instructs us to be ready to give the reason for our hope. Faith is not blind; it?s a response to the revelation of God?s Truth. We must present the reasons why we believe as well as testify of our spiritual experiences. Experience must be judged at the bar of truth.
Hope is the anchor of truth. That is why we should be ready to answer the question, ?How do you know that what you believe is true?? Never accept the patronising response some people might give you when you share the gospel: ?That?s very nice for you. I?m glad that you have such a faith.? What they are really saying, ?That?s your faith ? mine is different!? If the gospel is true then it is true for everyone. Jesus came to reveal God and to offer his life on the cross for all. Without it, there is no hope for you, for your friends and family, and no hope for the world in which we live.

No-one is born Christian. We become Christians through the work of the Holy Spirit as he draws us to Christ, reveals his true identity and enables us to believe in the message of his gospel. The result of this supernatural work is certainty, a deep and reliable conviction that Jesus Christ is real, that he is the Son of God and that he died for our sins. This is true faith and it connects us with the reality of God himself.

For many people who struggle with the issues of faith and religion, this Christian certainty is dangerous arrogance. To them, it is arrogant because we claim to have come to know the one and only truth. To their mind, it is dangerous because such certainty leads to religious fanaticism and provokes such atrocities as 9/11 in New York, 7/7 in London and the recent mass killings in Oslo.
The rival claims of different religions are considered to be arguments about personal viewpoints and have nothing to do with reality. Today, the notion of truth itself is being challenged. For many people, reality does not mean something absolute or true in itself. Rather, it is a matter of personal interpretation. Absolute truth does not exist. This lies behind much post modern thinking today and it leads to some bizarre conclusions. Not even the certainties of modern science are safe.
Richard Dawkins, the champion of fundamentalist atheism and upholder of the sanctity of modern science once asked an anthropologist the following:
Suppose there is a tribe? who believe that the moon is an old calabash tossed into the sky, hanging only just out of reach above the treetops. Do you really claim that our scientific truth ? that the moon is about a quarter of a million miles away and a quarter of the diameter of the Earth ? is no more true than the tribe?s calabash? ?Yes,? the anthropologist said, ?we are just brought up in a culture that sees the world in a scientific way. They are brought up to see the world in another way. Neither way is more true than the other.?[i]
With this kind of thinking, it is no wonder that the gospel is not being taken seriously. There is no interest in truth. Just perception. But the message of the gospel is not a mere matter of private opinion. It is based on the historic appearance of Christ in this world. It appeals to the facts of history which validate the claims of Christ. The death and resurrection of Jesus is one of the best-attested facts of ancient history. The gospel was not invented or merely imagined by early Christians. Faith in Christ was born as a result of Christ?s resurrection which was clearly attested by many witnesses (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). Nothing else explains the courage and passion of the Early Church who, against all odds, turned the world upside down through their message.
