Isaiah 53 is arguably the greatest chapter in the Bible. Charles Spurgeon called it ?the Bible in miniature, the Gospel at its essence?. It is the leading messianic text of the Old Testament and is referred to by the early church more than any other passage. It points to the person and mission of Jesus- his life, death, resurrection, ascension, and intercession – more than any other Old Testament passage.

It also lays the theological foundation for the Gospel like no other. It points both to the crucifixion and the atonement of Christ in a manner that sounds as though Isaiah 53 were written as history rather than prophecy. Indeed, it is as if Isaiah was an eye witness to what was going on between Good Friday and Easter – and even to Christ?s intercession!

And yet Isaiah 53 is prophecy – proclaiming with infallible accuracy seven hundred years in advance what Jesus would be like and what he would do.

In Acts 8:26 an angel of the Lord told Philip to go to a certain desert road. Philip had no idea why he would be given directions like that, but he went. He came to a chariot where a man happened to be reading from Isaiah 53. The Holy Spirit told Philip to go to the chariot, and Philip asked the man in the chariot (an Ethiopian eunuch) if he understood what he was reading.

The man replied: ?How can I unless someone explains it to me?? Philip accepted an invitation to sit in the chariot to explain these words, ?He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.? (Acts 8:31-33) Then Philip, beginning with that very passage of Scripture, told the Ethiopian the good news about Jesus. That verse represents the tip of the iceberg of how the early church felt about Isaiah 53. It was all about Jesus.

The name ?Jesus? does not appear in Isaiah 53, but its recurring themes – vicarious suffering, total obedience, utter willingness to suffer, the guilt of the people of God, the Lord laying on him our iniquity, being cut off from the land of the living, being numbered with the transgressors, the divine approval – all point to Jesus of Nazareth and what he did by dying on the cross. Prophecy rarely refers to a person?s actual name in advance but normally portrays the person or situation in a way that, once they have come to pass, leaves no doubt to the believer. This is a key: it is for the believer. Faith is a prerequisite in grasping prophecy in advance as well as seeing it clearly in its fulfilment. God never instructs his prophets to forecast the future in a way that removes the need for faith. Neither is the fulfilment of prophecy so definite that faith is no longer required. The exception to the latter would be the Second Coming of Jesus (Revelation1:7). There will be no doubting then! But all fulfilled prophecies in advance of the Last Day will require faith – which is partly why the Jews missed their Messiah. They needed a ?sign? and no sign was given; only the prophet?s word (Matthew 12:39).

Isaiah?s opening word in this chapter raises the question: why believe in Jesus? ?Who has believed our message?? Indeed, why should they?

There are actually two questions that open Isaiah 53: ?Who has believed our message?? and ?To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?? That latter question implies that one needs a revelation in order for a person to believe the message.

A frequent question people often ask after their conversion is: ?Why did I not see this before?? But the faith that saves is a gift of God. ?For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God? (Ephesians 2:8). One can believe only by the enabling and sovereign grace of the Holy Spirit. ?The Spirit gives life? (John 6:63). God said to Moses: ??I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.? It does not, therefore, depend on man?s desire or effort, but on God?s mercy? (Exodus 33:19). When a person believes, it is not a person ?working up faith?, because of the sheer mercy and compassion of God.

There is nothing sufficiently good in any of us that would force God to show his mercy. But if he is pleased to show it, we can only thank him. We will never be able to thank him enough.

Why then does anybody believe? Answer: it is owing to the mercy of God. Not only that; when a person is given faith they are immediately ready to obey – and ask: ?What next?? The Ethiopian eunuch believed and even asked to be baptized (Acts 8:36).

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth by the Word of His power. He filled the universe with His beauty, His joy and His glory. As a special act of love, God made humanity in His own personal image. Adam and Eve were the crowning act of creation, and they were blessed with a special place on earth in the garden of Eden. God?s plan was for all people to live with Him forever, like Adam and Eve, in perfect fellowship!
But they disobeyed God, and the beauty of God?s handiwork was spoilt by their sin. As a result, Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden, humanity was banished from God?s presence, and every part of creation came under God?s curse. Sin began to spread and take effect. Everything was subjected to futility. Sickness, pain and death polluted every part of God?s world.

THE GOD OF HOPE

But God did not abandon His world or the people He?d made. When He pronounced His curse, He offered the first promise of salvation ? a promise that pointed to Jesus.
God promised that the woman?s seed would crush the serpent?s head, and that the serpent would bruise the seed?s heel. This was fulfilled when Jesus died on the cross and destroyed Satan?s kingdom.
On the cross, Jesus paid the price of sin and released God?s new creation power. Calvary marks the end of the old and the beginning of the new.
The new creation has begun. In His resurrection, Jesus became the ?first-fruit? of the new creation ? which will come in its fullness when Jesus returns.
The resurrection from the dead and the redemption of the body are our great hope. When Jesus comes again, we?ll never have to face pain, sickness, sin, temptation, weakness, failure, death ? or anything which has to do with the old life.
Yet this new creation has already begun. Old things have passed away; all things have become new. People who are in Christ Jesus are participating now in God?s new creation.
My friend, if you?re a believer, you are in Christ; and the Bible promises that you already have:
? a new standing with God ? you?ve been justified, declared righteous by faith;
? a new relationship with God ? you?ve been adopted as God?s child, born into His family;
? a new fellowship with the Holy Spirit ? you?ve been indwelt and filled by the Spirit;
? a new life of freedom ? you?ve been set free from the power of sin, death and the devil;
? a new position ? you?ve been seated with Christ in heavenly places;
? a new destiny ? you?ve been promised a great inheritance as a joint-heir with Christ;
? a new security ? your old life has gone forever, and now you are hidden in Christ.
Praise God, these promises are true and glorious!

GOD?S WORDS FOR YOU

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17
The earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
Romans 8:19
Creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Romans 8:21
We also have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
Romans 8:23
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3
Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1
God predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.
Ephesians 1:5
Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the Word of God which lives and abides forever.
1 Peter 1: 23
You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Romans 8:9
He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come to judgement, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:24
Through death, He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Hebrews 2:14-15
You are of God, and have overcome, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4
You know Him who is from the beginning, and you are strong, and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.
1 John 2:14
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs ? heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
Romans 8:16-17
God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.
Ephesians 2:4-5
You died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:3-4
Those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren. Moreover, whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
Romans 8:29-30

YOUR FAITH DECLARATION

?I declare that I am a new creation in Christ. Old things have passed away, and my life has been made new.
I now walk in the power of Almighty God?s new creation, with my eyes fixed firmly on the hope of my calling.
I am being renewed every day by the Holy Spirit, who lives in me and fills me with God?s presence and power.
The Father has declared me righteous. He has adopted me into His family. And He has set me free from the power of sin, death and the devil.
I am now seated with Christ in heavenly places. I am a co-heir with Christ and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven.
I have been crucified with Christ, and my life is now hidden with Him in God, my Father.
I now live my life in the body by the faith of Jesus, who saves me by His grace.
My new creation passion is to live for my Lord and my God, and to love and enjoy Him forever.?

Jones, born in Austin Texas, began the 30-minute testimony? two 15-minute videos with a man from the religious Forerunner Chronicles website? with his ascent from a 4-and-a-half-year-old child actor to stardom. At the age of 9, he was offered a job on “Two and a Half Men,” which inducted him into the world of showbiz, and by high school, he was using drugs like marijuana and acid.
“I was living for myself” and “being a stereotypical celebrity,” the 19-year-old actor said.
However, an incident in December of 2011 would change his life. During a conversation with a friend, he realized that “God is the reason for all this.”
“I feel like I just accepted God in my life,” said Jones. After searching for churches, he settled on a Seventh Day Adventist congregation, but conflicts with his lifestyle soon arose. His portrayal of Jake Harper on “Two and a Half Men,” along with the show’s less-than-Christian content, took a toll on him spiritually. He even advised people to stop watching the show.
“If you watch ‘Two and a Half Men,’ please stop watching ‘Two and a Half Men,'” he said around the 7:45 mark of the second half of the testimony. “I’m on ‘Two and a Half Men,’ and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it, please stop filling your head with filth.”

The secular media obviously struggles to comprehend what has happened to him, just read what E news online says about him:

“Angus T. Jones‘ shocking remarks, in which he denounces Two and a Half Men as “filth,” has people close to him deeply concerned about his well-being.
A source close to the situation tells E! News that both Jones’ mom, Carey, and those who work with him on his CBS sitcom want to make sure the 19-year-old actor hasn’t been “brainwashed” by his new church.”

The Scriptures give us the real wisdom we need. Above all, they show us how to be saved and how to live our lives until the end when we shall be with Christ forever. The divine capacity of the Scriptures lies in their divine origin. They are the product of divine breath, that is, God?s very Word. They are ?God-breathed? making them not only infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and belief but also making them useful and practically relevant in all matters of life and living. The Word of God is complete, instructing us, convicting us, correcting us and leading us into the patterns of righteousness.

Key Thought

God?s Word is sure and infallible carrying the very revelation of God to us. This revelation not only shows us how to get saved and be ready for heaven, but it also reveals how to live our lives on the earth to the honour and glory of God.

Prayer

Lord, I thank you for the sure word of the Lord I have in my Bible. Help me to understand it and follow it all the days of my life. Help me to receive the correction and direction I need for today.

Discipleship Steps

The Bible is God?s manual for life and living. It will thoroughly equip you for your calling in life to live for God and to influence others to do the same. This means you take God?s Word every day for your instruction ? what God?s standard is, your reproof ? where you are going wrong, your correction ? how to put it right, and for your training ? how to develop a godly lifestyle. Learn to come to the Bible looking for these things day by day.

The Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of salvation and joy. Jesus came to set the captives free and bring healing to the broken-hearted.

Beauty for Ashes

This is like being set free from the captivity of negativity, oppression and depression. Without this, we would have perished under the weight of bondage and fear. But the good news has reached us: deliverance to the captives! The jubilee time of joy has arrived. No more mourning, or crying ? only restoration and joy. This gives us the strength to rebuild our own lives and become agents of change for others. This joy is the means of changing our world, giving beauty for ashes.

Key Thought

The good news of salvation begins with personal freedom, but it doesn?t end there. We can take our experience of Christ and the strength that it brings to us and begin to proclaim that deliverance to the world and see the captives set free and the waste places of our world restored.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for the Spirit of freedom, deliverance and joy that rests on my life. I dare to believe that You have anointed me with the same Spirit that brought me out of mourning and into rejoicing.

Discipleship Steps

As you experience the life-transforming joy of the Lord, you can become an agent of God?s restoration in the life of others. Look at these truths and begin to build your thinking around them. Make sure that the joy of the Lord is topped up in your heart today and ask God to use you to touch others with this same Spirit of joy.

Read: Isaiah 61:1-7

The Beauty is within reach…if we truly “Let go” the old will be turned to ashes Based on Isaiah 61:1-3
Lyrics:
He gives beauty for ashes
Strength for fear
Gladness for mourning
Peace for despair
When sorrow seems to surround you
When suffering hangs heavy o’er your head
Know that tomorrow brings
Wholeness and healing
God knows your need
Just believe what He said
He gives beauty for ashes
Strength for fear
Gladness for mourning
Peace for despair
When what you’ve done keeps you from moving on
When fear wants to make itself at home in your heart
Know that forgiveness brings
Wholeness and healing
God knows your need
Just believe what He said
He gives beauty for ashes
Strength for fear
Gladness for mourning
Peace for despair
I once was lost but God has found me
Though I was bound I’ve been set free
I’ve been made righteous in His sight
A display of His splendor all can see
He gives beauty for ashes
Strength for fear
Gladness for mourning
Peace for despair
The album won an ASCAP award for “Beauty For Ashes” as the most played song (1997).

Joy is the greatest evidence you have that you are living in the victory of Christ. It demonstrates that you are looking at the larger picture and not just the details of your life.

Joy, overflowing...

God is the God of salvation and this is like a well of joy within you. Sometimes the joy overflows with ease, but at other times, you have to work at it. It takes faith to draw water from the wells of salvation. When you are trusting God, you will find it easy to turn your back on fear and look to the Lord for His answers in your life. Even if they don?t seem close, you will trust Him and praise Him anyway, for He is the true source of your strength and confidence.

Key Thought

God?s victory is complete and your salvation is fully accomplished in Christ. But, at times, you have to make an effort to draw on the reserves of joy and blessing within you. But all this is based on the established reality of God?s salvation.

Prayer

Lord, I choose to focus on my absolute victory in Christ. I proclaim that You are great and greatly to be praised, and I choose the path of joy for my life.

Discipleship Steps

Just as in Zion of old, God is great among His people. He has made known His salvation to the nations. God wants that same confidence to sound from your life. This is the confidence you have that God?s salvation is sure, that He power remains constant, and His love for you is undiminished. Think how this will affect your attitude today. Let this joy be your confidence as you go out into your day.

Read Psalm 30.?This Psalm shows you that you can confidently put you hope in the Lord and in His unfailing love. Even when you have perhaps not always fully done what you know God wants, you can ask God to help you.
The consequences of your sin may bring pain and sorrow, but God will forgive you when you turn back to Him. Then weeping can turn into joy, sorrow and mourning into rejoicing and dancing. This is the nature of the favour of God. It enables us to face up to our actions by giving us the hope of forgiveness and restoration.
Key Thought
If you ever fail the Lord, remember His mercy is never far away. Turn quickly back to Him and ask Him for His help to put things right. There is no joy or blessing in disobedience and the path to forgiveness and restoration is open to you.
Prayer
Lord, You have promised to help me in time of trouble. I know that I am not yet what you want me to be, but I thank you for the things that have changed in my life. Please forgive me and turn my mourning into dancing once again.
Discipleship Steps
When things are not going well and you find it difficult to follow God?s way, remember, above all things, God is with you to help you. Take the decision that you will not allow any time to pass before you get right with God again asking for His grace and forgiveness. Bring your weaknesses and failures to Him and ask Him for special grace today to overcome them in His name.
Many believers hear more about the price of forgiveness and the cost of salvation than about the free-and-overflowing grace of the Father who, in his passionate desire for the homecoming of sinners, gave up his only Son.?We do not need to understand everything about salvation to receive it. We are not required to appreciate the full cost of forgiveness before we can benefit from it – we can learn about this later.
In fact, the only condition of forgiveness is that we respond to the Father?s grace with humble, outstretched arms and a thankful, joyful heart. We simply come to the Father, like the lost son in the parable, and take God at his word. This is another vital key to understanding God?s salvation by grace .
If we do not look to the Father and his grace, if he is not the focus of our faith and salvation, we may present a message which suggests that the best people can hope for is that God can be persuaded into some sort of uncomfortable tolerance of sinners by Jesus.
We may think that returning sons and daughters still need to keep their distance from the Father, and that our gratitude should be showered upon Jesus for somehow twisting the Father?s arm to allow us into a back-room of the family home as the lowest form of servant.
This sort of unbiblical thinking leads to passivity, fear, self-condemnation, low expectations, a lack of boldness, and legalism. This may have been how the prodigal son felt while he was trudging home. His prepared speech suggests that he was not truly repentant on his way home ? he still did not believe in the goodness of his father and was therefore still lost, alienated from his father .
But of course, this does not represent the father in Jesus? parable, and it is a terrible caricature of the heavenly Father who sent his Son into a far country to make a way home, and who is now waiting with longing to usher us into his presence as sons and daughters with unconditional grace and uninhibited celebration.
To be a believer is to know that the Father has defined our identity through the cross and that he now calls us his sons and daughters. He beckons us to come forward and receive the inheritance of our salvation – the robe of sonship, the ring of authority, the sandals of freedom, and so on.
It is this free grace of the Father which initiates the sending of the Son and sets up salvation – so that the Father may open his arms and welcome the multitudes of children who are brought to glory by the Son through the Spirit.

Just as the secret of a stable building lies in the foundations, so you need secure foundations in your Christian life. Jesus said that the person who put his teaching into practice was like a wise man who built his house on a rock (Matthew 7:24-25). These firm foundations meant his house survived the storms and remained secure.

It is important to understand the basic teachings of Christianity and build your life on these foundations. Hebrews 6:1-3 explains what these elementary principles are, beginning with ?repentance from dead works and faith toward God?.
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

?

Beginning as a Christian
You need to be born again to be a Christian. Your first birth was physical, bringing you into the world. But there is another birth, a spiritual birth, which you can only receive directly from God. Jesus said, ?Unless you are born again you cannot see the kingdom of God, because you do not have the life of God within you.?
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 3:1-3

Being born again means receiving the new life of God and a new nature from him. It is necessary for you to be born again because that is the way you receive spiritual life, as Jesus said, ?That which is of the flesh, is flesh and that which is of the Spirit, is spirit.?
How to be born again
Jesus called people to repent and to believe the good news. That is how you are born again. The good news is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It tells us that Jesus Christ came to die for the sins of the world and that, by believing in him, we receive everlasting life ? life that will never perish. This is the message preached from the days of the early church until now.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world…

It is important to have ?a good beginning? as a Christian ensuring you grasp all the basic elements of your newfound faith in Christ. Laying these foundations correctly ensures that you can go on to build a strong Christian life. First, we must look at the response God wants us to make to the call of the gospel.
Peter preached a powerful sermon on the Day of Pentecost and he called for the following response from those who heard it. He highlighted several important elements that must be present if you want to have a sound beginning as a Christian and grow strong in your faith.

?

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38

Repent
First of all, we read the word, ?repent?.? Repentance is, ?a change of mind leading to a radical turn-about of life?.

?

“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.

Acts 26:19-20

There are three elements to repentance:

A change of mind ? you admit you were wrong to live without Christ

A change of direction ? you turn your heart towards God

A change of behaviour ? you begin to walk in obedience to Christ.

Believe
The other side of the coin to repentance is faith. Repentance is what you turn away from, and faith is what you now choose to put your trust in.

The proper object of your faith and trust is Christ

?Testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 20:21

Faith is contrasted with works or good deeds

But to him who does not work but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.

Romans 4:5

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9

Faith involves believing who Jesus is and what he came to do

?Jesus is the Son of God, the Lord. He died for our sins and was raised from the dead so that we might be saved.
?the word of faith which we preach: 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon him.

Romans 10:8-12

Faith gives you the assurance that you are saved

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. ”

John 6:35

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.?

John 5:24-25

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:12-13
